Hi, I'm Peter

Greetings and welcome to the ALIVE Blog!

This is me, Peter.

You might know me as that guy who creeps around ALIVE with his giant camera. You'd be right. I take most of the photos you see online and I'm also one of the people behind the graphics, branding, and videos you see at church.

I don't actually have many photos of myself. I'm usually the one on the other side of the camera. So the best I can do for now is this photo of me making a baby cry.

Most people know me as a photographer, and that’s pretty accurate. Not just because I am constantly using a camera, but because I approach life the same way I would a photograph. I tend to interact with my world as it happens frame by frame, as an explorer seeking out the most beautiful, the most interesting, and the most true.

Ah, that's more like it.

Ah, that's more like it.

A bit about me:

I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. (I’m not a Mormon). Moved around a few times until 3rd grade when my family settled in Johnson City, TN. Had the standard public schooling experience. I'm glad those days are over. I went to Milligan College and met some great people. Learned a ton of things. Forgot most of them, save for those worth remembering, then graduated in 2013 with a snazzy document that says I'm qualified to be an adult. In the two years since then, I've only just begun to go to bed before 2:00 a.m. and attempt to enjoy coffee. Both huge adulthood milestones in my book. I currently work at First Christian Church producing various types of media and assisting with branding and other creative-type things (including this blog). I get to do paid photo jobs every now and then, plus the occasional personal project whenever inspiration pays me a visit.

I love being outside. As I type this, I’m compulsively glancing out the window at the blue sky, high 70’s perfection that is mocking my current indoor captivity. On any given day, I’d rather be: hiking, tree climbing, camping, playing disc golf, fishing, snowboarding, slacklining, boating. Heck, even lawn mowing. Yet, there is something to be said of the great indoors too. For within it lies the treasure of movies. And food. Two of my great loves. More on that in a future post.

I keep discovering new things that I’m passionate about, but I can’t say I’m a person of many strong opinions. I’m more of a spectator of those that do. Pass the popcorn. Though, I do have thoughts on a select few things, and I plan to share them with you in the weeks to come. Creativity, apathy, authenticity, perfectionism, favor, discouragement, joy, inconsistency. -All things that are in my wheelhouse. Hope you’re ready.

People who get to know me understand that I don't do much dwelling on the past or the future. I'm more of a here-and-now guy. But I've got to say, lately I've really been getting excited about what’s to come. Both for me personally, and for this blog in general.

There are some insanely funny, interesting, and thoughtful people who will be contributing to this blog. People that I look up to and share life with. I know I’m a better person because of them, and I’m confident that they will have a huge impact on others through this blog. Not just from their words of wisdom, (which are many) but from them just being real. Letting the world get an up-close look at what their lives are like without makeup on.

That’s the whole point of this blog. To give flesh and bones to these obscure figures we see at ALIVE.

This blog allows us to share inspiration and encouragement, but also our personalities. Because after all, we are each wonderfully and uniquely made. Some of us are borderline weird, and that’s something we ought to be pretty proud of.
I’m honored to be the one to break the ice.

The best is yet to come.

Peter
